OPEN & BESPOKE CHALLENGES EXPLAINED

Open Challenges: If you register on an Open Challenge you can opt to fundraise for any UK registered charity.

Bespoke Challenges: If you register on a Bespoke Challenge you agree to fundraise for the charity identified of this challenge.

Please note: Payment options on a Bespoke Challenge may be different to the below information – please refer to the charity and booking conditions.

As always, it is really important you read the small print, in our case the Open Challenge AgreementIt is a standard agreement for the travel industry and informs you about cancellation charges, as well as outlining other costs that we may have to pass on in certain instances. Once it fills your screen please click the 'download' and print off to read the document carefully.

We provide three different payment options for our Open Challenges in order to offer you both choice and flexibility; Fundraising, Part-Payment and Full-Payment.

We understand that getting to grips with them can sometimes be a bit confusing, especially if you are new to the world of fundraising challenges. The table below provides useful details, but if you still have questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call.

Pricing explained table

UK one day & weekend challenges

Under the Fundraising option, the participant has agreed to provide the Charity with 100% of the minimum sponsorship no later than 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the trip.

Part Payment option not available on UK Challenge weekends.

Payment options for Bespoke Challenges may operate differently and you will need to refer to the specific details from the charity regarding payment options.

How does the Fundraising Option Work?

Your chosen charity keeps 50% of the Fundraising Target, and 100% of any additional funds you raise. Your charity only pays your costs once you have raised the minimum amount: there is NO risk to your charity

The other 50% of your Fundraising Target covers your tour costs. Airlines and other suppliers do not give their services for free, and nor does Discover Adventure! You’re travelling with a professional company trusted by your charity to ensure you are pushing your limits in a safe environment.

Providing you raise the target amount, you pay only the Registration Fee. For many who could not justify the expense otherwise, this turns your dream trip into a feasible goal.

Fundraising to secure your place on a trip provides significant motivation to persevere when you are finding things tough, especially if you have very personal reasons for choosing that charity.

What if I don’t think I can raise that amount?

The Full-Pay Payment Option allows you to pay your own costs; most of our customers also raise considerable funds for their charity in addition, but there is no target amount.

The Part-Payment Option takes the middle ground – pay a contribution towards your Trip Cost (in addition to the Registration Fee) and this lowers your Fundraising Target.

Won’t some people think they are sponsoring my holiday?

Some might, but explaining the below should help:

  • This does not constitute a holiday for most people! Your trip has been designed to be challenging: you will struggle at times. You can help emphasise this by choosing a grade of trip which potential sponsors can appreciate will push your limits.
  • You won’t be doing the sight-seeing typical of a holiday: it’s all about the physical activity. There’s seldom a chance for a lie-in, and you’ll be out in all weathers. You can’t change your plans if it rains!
  • If it’s a real challenge for you to camp / go without your home comforts / get up early – tell people! Many people will sponsor you for that alone!
  • Fundraising itself is hard work and a huge commitment … so is the fitness training
  • Trips like these motivate people to raise far more than they would donate to a charity. Discover Adventure trips have raised in excess of £100 million for different causes since we began.

Why are Airline Taxes listed separately?

When we book our flights this information is sometimes not available from airlines if it is too far in advance. Because they price it separately, so do we. It means you know exactly what you have to budget; we pride ourselves on transparency and don’t like hidden costs any more than you do.

If you have any queries please just contact us.

WHEN YOUR CHALLENGE INCLUDES A FLIGHT ORGANISED BY DISCOVER ADVENTURE

It is important to be aware that airlines apply an Airline Tax and where relevant this is clearly stated on the dates and prices page when you go to book. This is in addition to the Trip Cost, relating to aviation taxes and/or fuel payable to the airline(s) operating your flight. For group bookings, as airlines price the Airline Tax separately, so do we. We pride ourselves on transparency and don’t like hidden costs any more than you do.In order to guarantee our departures, we book our group flights roughly a year in advance. The Airline Taxes often come in very high but are not usually confirmed this far ahead. So that you know exactly what you have to budget, Discover Adventure set the Airline Tax contribution you will have to pay accordingly:

  • On the majority of our overseas trips involving flights, the set contribution will be £250, and Discover Adventure absorb the additional amount
  • On some trips involving flights where the Airline Taxes are lower, Discover Adventure absorb the full amount and you will see that there is no additional tax to pay

If you are registered on the Fundraising or Part-Payment Option on an Open Challenge, your charity will pay the airline taxes along with your Trip Cost, provided you have raised sufficient funds. If you are registered on the Full Payment Option, your airline taxes will be added to your trip cost invoice. It's important that you understand how all of this works and why, and which option suits you best, before you sign up. Please click on the Challenge Agreement link below for full details and please don't hesitate to get in touch if you're unsure.

Bespoke challenges may operate differently and you will need to refer to the specific details regarding airline taxes and payment options if registering on a bespoke charity challenge.
