Rift Valley Challenge - 'Trek for Jack'
Mother and Daughter, Sarah and Rebecca Houlding took part in ‘Trek for Jack’ in July 2013. Baby Jack Houlding died just 5 weeks into his short life eighteen years ago and the trek was in honour of this milestone being passed.
Taking up the challenge
‘To satisfy my need to challenge myself I signed myself up to the Rift Valley Masai Trek and Rebecca decided to get involved too. The 9 days across part of the Rift Valley home to the Masai Tribesman was challenging but amazing too and to stay on in Tanzania to help out at Light in Africa Project with the orphaned children was incredible too’.
Jack's short life
Jack was born with a heart defect which meant he had to undergo heart surgery twice which proved all too much for him in the end. During this time the family stayed close to Guy’s Hospital in a place called Ronald MacDonalds House at no expense to them – it turned out to be a real home from home. At the time the family raised funds for a cardiac machine for the ward at Guy’s and made a small donation to Ronald MacDonalds. This Challenge will see Ronald MacDonald House at Guy’s now benefit from over £4,500 of fundraising by this intrepid pair, enabling other parents to spend time with their desperately ill children without worrying about where they will stay and how they will function whilst they are away from home.
Sarah and Rebecca live in Maldon, Essex, they signed up in October 2012 to trek the Rift Valley with us in July 2013.
