Hi Guys

i am doing the Andean trail to Macchu Picchu in Sept 2010 and i have been out boot shopping this month but i am getting conflicting advice from the various shops - some insist that i need (somewhat expensive) mid height hiking boots, while other suggest that trail runners (approach shoes) are sufficient. What is everyone getting and any top tips from previous trekkers?

Thanks
TP

Hi TP,

I've always gone for boots when trekking as they have the extra support needed for the rough terrain. But I have seen some people wearing the shoes! I think it comes down to preference.

However, saying that it might be worth contacting Discover to check what the ground is like as you might need the extra ankle support!

Have a great time in Peru.

Go for boots. Any extended trek (more than 2 days) needs the extra
support. It just makes it easier on your ankles and feet in general. Believe
me if you sprain your ankle you'll wish you'd opted for boots ! As for
price, you shouldn't need to pay much more than approach shoes for a
pair of medium firm boots. There are lots around you only need the 3
season boots as long as they are waterproof. I paid £44 for mine (Grisport
Summit) and they have seen me trough two years worth of weekly
walks/scrambles in the lake district and 2 treks in Nepal. Another point
that people often overlook is the importance of socks, make sure you try
any footware on with the socks you intend to wear on the trek and if you
can afford it get walking socks that have a little more padding in the
pressure points and are less 'sweaty'. Erm check out
http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/buyers-guides/2-2.html they have
some useful buyers guides, hope some of this helps, Anna
