About the Challenge

The Amazon rainforest is legendary throughout the world as an ecosystem rich in vegetation, wildlife and indigenous culture, and one which is currently under constant threat from mankind.

The River Amazon’s source is in Peru, and the river carries around 20% of the world’s fresh water. The rainforest covers almost half of Peru and extends into 9 other South American countries. It contains approximately 50,000 species of higher plants – a staggering twenty percent of the world’s total. The tree canopy is so dense that almost no sunlight penetrates to the forest floor and there is very little undergrowth. Animal and bird life is incredibly rich, including colourful macaws and toucans, several species of monkey and the rare tapir, jaguar and Andean spectacled bear. Giant otters, caimans, capybara and piranha live in the many waterways.

This is your chance to experience the amazing diversity of flora and fauna set in part of the most famous and awe-inspiring rainforest in the world! We travel by plane and then river boat to our lodge on the banks of the Tambopata River, and explore the trails and waterways on foot and by boat. This isn’t a luxury experience, but it’s an unforgettable adventure in a unique and threatened world.

5 DAYS
  • (main group departs Cuzco)

Short morning flight to Puerto Maldonado. Founded at the turn of the century, Puerto Maldonado is known for its logging, rubber, coffee and brazil nut industries, and also as a centre for gold and oil prospectors. You will be met at the airport by one of the Lodge guides, and transported upriver by motorised canoe (approx 3 hours). Lunch is provided on-board and you can sit back on cushioned seats and relax, watching the vegetation change from colonised deforested areas to virgin rainforest. You will pass through the National Park checkpoint and pay the entrance fee to the reserve (not included, ensure you have some cash – you will also need your passports).

On arrival you’ll meet the staff at the Lodge, and can have a drink and settle in. Depending on arrival time, there will be a short walk into the forest either before or after dinner. The trail is dominated by giant brazil nut and dipteryx trees and a variety of wildlife has been seen here, despite its close proximity to the Lodge.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided. Lodge accommodation.

  • After an early breakfast a short boat ride takes you downriver to the head of the trail to Lake Sachavacayoc (Tapir Lake) which you’ll reach after approx 3 hours of trekking. The trail crosses streams and swampy ground and passes giant lapuna trees on its way to the spectacular hidden lake. You then explore the lake and its shores on canoes – a great way to spot wildlife. In the lake itself elusive black caimen and giant otters are occasionally spotted. After a picnic lunch you walk back to the river and return to the Lodge, where you’re free to relax.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided. Lodge accommodation

  • A dawn start is usually required for the canoe trip back to Puerto Maldonado; the views of the sunrise over the river make it well worth the early start on clear mornings. Wildlife is particularly active at this time, and you are quite likely to hear howler monkeys as they stake out their territories. Back at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, you fly to Lima and connect to your international flight home.

Breakfast provided. Provide own lunch and dinner. Hotel accommodation.

  • Land back in the UK.

Please note that circumstances can occur where we are unable to operate this extension exactly as described above. We reserve the right to change the itinerary or use alternative accommodation when conditions dictate. Alternative accommodation is of a very similar standard, offering similar facilities and activities as described in the itinerary, in the same area of the Peruvian Amazon. You will be notified of any changes in advance where possible, but we ask you to understand that, due to the remote location and the logistics involved, this is not always possible.

Detailed Information

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace. Inadequate training is likely to have an impact not just on your chances of completing the challenge, but enjoying it too - and we want you to have the time of your life!

Our challenges attract people of all levels of experience and fitness, all ages and backgrounds. We design our challenges so that everyone can go at their own pace: this is not a race. For logistical and safety reasons we sometimes need to re-group, so the front-runners may find themselves waiting for the slower ones. Please relax, and remember that this is a team effort that enables people to achieve their personal goals and earn sponsorship.
