About the Challenge

What better way to celebrate your achievements than a trip to discover Cape Town’s well-known winelands? Pampering opportunities await …!

We spend three days around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, staying overnight on historic, luxurious wine estates, enjoying the opportunity to taste fine wines and sample other gourmet delights. The pace is relaxed and the views are wonderful! You’ll also discover incredible scenery, charming small towns, lush gardens and artisan crafts, chocolate, cheese – and more wine!

This is a wonderful way to unwind, whether you’re a wine buff or simply want to treat yourself to a relaxing break in South Africa’s scenic interior.

5 DAYS
  • (main group departs Cape Town)

Leaving the city behind, we drive out to Constantia, the oldest wine region in South Africa, where we visit two of the region’s oldest wine estates and enjoy some wine-tasting. We then head out to Stellenbosch, in the greater Cape Winelands. After lunch and further wine-tasting we come to the historic Lanzerac Estate, set among lush gardens with views over the vineyards and mountains. We spend the night here in luxurious surroundings with a gourmet dinner; there is also a spa on site if you wish to truly pamper yourself!

Breakfast and Dinner provided. Provide own lunch. Hotel accommodation.

  • After a leisurely breakfast we head to Lanzerac’s cellar for a chocolate and wine tasting (you’ll have burned loads of calories on your main trip, so indulge and enjoy!) before exploring the quaint university town of Stellenbosch, with its Cape Dutch architecture. We then head over the Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek, stopping en-route at Tokara for great views and more wine-tasting. Then it’s on to Boschendal Estate, where we can visit the Manor House and rose gardens, before a picnic lunch on its famous lawns, enjoying the wonderful views. There’s time for shopping in the French-inspired town of Franschhoek before we drive on to Wellington and the beautiful Val du Charron wine estate, with its incredible views; we stay the night here.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided. Hotel accommodation.

  • Another day of treats awaits us! After kicking off with a wine estate visit in Wellington, we head to Diemersfontein Estate to taste the famous chocolate Pinotage. Then it’s off to Paarl for another taste of fine wines from Fairview, also known for their goat’s cheeses, and we finish at the artisan Spice Route in the shadow of the impressive Paarl Rock, the third largest granite outcrop in the world. Here we have a leisurely lunch and you can explore the wide range of art and gourmet experiences at this unique venue, from the local artists’ gallery to boutique beer and biltong. We then head back to Cape Town for our final night in South Africa.

Breakfast provided. Provide own lunch and dinner. Hotel accommodation.

  • Depending on flight schedules, enjoy some free time to relax or explore before heading back to the airport and the flight back to London (usually an overnight flight).

Breakfast provided. Provide own lunch and dinner.

Detailed Information

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace. Inadequate training is likely to have an impact not just on your chances of completing the challenge, but enjoying it too - and we want you to have the time of your life!

Our challenges attract people of all levels of experience and fitness, all ages and backgrounds. We design our challenges so that everyone can go at their own pace: this is not a race. For logistical and safety reasons we sometimes need to re-group, so the front-runners may find themselves waiting for the slower ones. Please relax, and remember that this is a team effort that enables people to achieve their personal goals and earn sponsorship.
