About the Challenge

This 100k route from London to Brighton is unique and exclusive to Blind Veterans UK and we have tried to make it as off-road and scenic as possible to make the walk enjoyable for our participants.

The event is open to all abilities and both individuals and teams of four or five can take part. Why not put together a four or five man relay team, dividing up the total distance between you!

London to Brighton 100K Trek

  • The route follows The Wandle Trail out of South West London and down through Surrey and Sussex, finishing at our centre in Ovingdean, Brighton. Hot meals, drinks and snacks are provided at rest stops along the route and our events team will offer full support with training and fundraising.

Your epic journey will begin on Saturday 1st July 2017 in Fulham, South West London. There will be an early start in anticipation of the adventure lying ahead. Following a briefing from the events organisers, a member from Blind Veterans UK will talk about how much the money they have raised will help to support other members such as themselves.

You will leave the busy city behind you and head south, along the banks of the Thames and start to head in to more rural surroundings. You will then march along the Wandle Trail which is popular which walkers and cyclists alike. There are plenty of semi-rural parklands as well as the Carshalton Ponds and Wilderness Island. After stopping at Oaks Park for the first refreshment stop, walkers make their way in to the North Downs and head towards Godstone. It is a lot more rural around here and walkers follow the public footpaths and the pretty village green. The walk takes you through the night, in the Sussex countryside down to Plumpton which takes you through the South Downs and an opportunity to take in some beautiful scenery. The sea comes into view as you approach the finish line at the Blind Veterans UK centre in Ovingdean. There will of course be some welcome food and drink await for all walkers to celebrate their achievement, together with a well earned massage!

We also have a dedicated microsite and Facebook group, offer full medical and logistical support and you will receive a specially designed 100k t-shirt and medal to wear with pride. One of our participants from 2013 has said, “It was the greatest personal achievement of my life. For those not sure about this year…Get involved!”.

Detailed Information

  • Your trip will be led by experienced Discover Adventure leaders and support crew. Our leaders are selected for their knowledge and experience, friendliness and approachability, sense of humour and ability to safely and effectively deal with any situation that arises; they are also trained in first aid. You are in very safe hands with a Discover Adventure leader. The crew will have mobile phones and/or radios where appropriate, medical kit and other safety apparatus where necessary, as well as vehicle support.

  • An expedition doctor or medic accompanies the group (dependent on group size.) Their role is to look after the well-being of the whole group and deal with any incidents. They help the leaders to ensure the trip runs smoothly, and encourage you when things get tough. The total number of crew looking after you will depend on the final size of your group, but at Discover Adventure we pride ourselves on our high leader: participant ratio and believe it leads to greater trip enjoyment as well as excellent trip safety.

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. Training is all part of the preparation: inadequate training will impact on your enjoyment of the trip, and your chances of completing it. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace.
