About the Challenge

Join Hope and Homes for Children on this incredible road cycling tour through the heart of Romania. Our route will take in the sights of Transylvania, including the Carpathian Mountains and one of world's most iconic roads - the Transfargarasan Highway, which famously featured in an episode of Top Gear. This route is fast becoming one of THE challenges for cyclists in Europe so now is the time to take it on for yourself.

Ride Romania Hope and Homes for Children

  • We arrive at Bucharest airport and drive to our start point at the Agres Monastery. From here we begin our ride; don’t let the distance fool you – it’s a short day but all up hill to the Vidrauru Dam. Night hotel.

    Cycle approx 29km

  • Today we ride the iconic Transfargarasan highway – a tough ride that despite being 81km will take us all day. Jeremy Clarkson described this road as “Every great corner from every great race track in the world, knitted together to create one unbroken grey ribbon of automotive perfection!” Despite its draw, the road sees very little traffic due to its remoteness thus making it cycling perfection for us. We spend most of the day ascending the pass from South to North then descend the part that Top Gear filmed. An unforgettable cycle experience! Night hotel.

    Cycle approx 81km

  • Another early start and after breakfast we set of for Dracula’s castle in Bran. A much flatter day but one that will still test us. The scenery will feel very different as we leave the mountains and skirt along the northern edge of the Carpathian Mountains. We arrive at the castle for lunch and after a well-deserved meal there is time to visit the castle before transferring back to Bucharest by vehicle. We have time to check into our hotel before meeting again for a celebration meal.

    Cycle approx 97km

  • We have time in the morning to explore Bucharest before then transferring to the airport for our flight back to the UK.

  • Today we will take you to visit some of the vital work made possible by your support. You will meet some of the families we are working with in and around Bucharest as well as visit a number of the institutions we are working hard to close. This is an emotional but inspiring day and will be followed by a Q&A session with the HHC Romania team. Night hotel.

Detailed Information

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • Travel Insurance is compulsory on our challenges; we strongly suggest that you arrange insurance cover as soon as your booking with us is confirmed. Should you need to cancel on medical grounds, you will need insurance to cover the costs involved (registration fee and any trip costs depending on cancellation date).

You should also ensure that you have adequate cover for the type of challenge you are taking part in as well as medical emergencies, evacuation and repatriation.
You can obtain a quote with Insure to Travel from our website here, or you may choose to take out your own travel insurance, just remember to let us know the policy number and emergency phone number!
