About the Challenge

Make the most of your time in South Africa and stay on to explore the sights in and around stunningly-situated Cape Town!

This extension trip is packed with a wide variety of scenic, historic and cultural highlights, from the spectacular coastal scenery around the famous Cape of Good Hope, to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. We’ll also get the chance to see marine life such as seals and penguins, explore the city’s historic sights and vibrant markets, and visit the township communities which are such a vital part of Cape Town’s past and present. Our time culminates with a cable car ride up Table Mountain to soak up the expansive views – a perfect way to end our adventure!

5 DAYS
  • (main group departs Cape Town)

We set off from the group hotel and drive along the Atlantic Coast, passing Clifton and Camps Bay. At the fishing village of Hout Bay there’s a chance to take a scenic boat trip to see an impressive colony of cape fur seals (at additional cost), before driving to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where the renowned Two Oceans restaurant offers a wonderfully panoramic lunch spot. We then have time for a hike along the cliffs to the Cape of Good Hope, admiring the wonderful views. We break our journey back at beautiful Boulders Beach, where we can view the rare jackass penguins that live here – the only species of penguin on the African continent.

Breakfast provided. Provide own Lunch and Dinner. Hotel accommodation.

  • Our day starts with a boat trip to Robben Island, the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years along with other political prisoners. After time for lunch at the Waterfront, we head out to the Cape Flats, where we explore townships including Langa and Nyanga. We’ll have the chance to try sorghum beer at a local shebeen, visit a market and herbalist, as well as a men’s hostel and a centre supporting pregnant women and young children. You’ll have the opportunity to talk to the local residents and will gain a great insight into these vibrant but often impoverished communities.

Breakfast provided. Provide own Lunch and Dinner. Hotel accommodation.

  • Exploring Cape Town by mountain bike us a wonderful experience, and allows us to explore the main sights between sea and mountain! We’ll take in the harbour where the first ships set anchor over 350 years ago, bohemian Long Street, and historic cobbled Greenmarket Square, one of the city’s earliest squares and now a vibrant market selling crafts and art from all over Africa. After cycling past landmark buildings, quiet canals and colourful flower markets, we leave our bikes behind and head up to Table Mountain, where we board the revolving cable car for the exhilarating ride to the top of this iconic mountain. We have time to soak up the breath-taking views over the city and coastline, and if you can if you wish take the short hike to Maclear’s Beacon, the highest point on Table Mountain; we then head back down for our last night in Cape Town.

Breakfast provided. Provide own Lunch and Dinner. Hotel accommodation

Detailed Information

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace. Inadequate training is likely to have an impact not just on your chances of completing the challenge, but enjoying it too - and we want you to have the time of your life!

Our challenges attract people of all levels of experience and fitness, all ages and backgrounds. We design our challenges so that everyone can go at their own pace: this is not a race. For logistical and safety reasons we sometimes need to re-group, so the front-runners may find themselves waiting for the slower ones. Please relax, and remember that this is a team effort that enables people to achieve their personal goals and earn sponsorship.
