About the Challenge

Join the Stroke Association for their annual Thames Bridges Bike Ride. This memorable cycle challenge around London takes in world-famous landmarks and less well-known sights. Choose from 3 routes; Challenge - 55 miles, Classic - 35 miles - or the family friendly Mini - 8 miles.

From our hub on the Thames at Chiswick, you’ll be able to enjoy the quieter Sunday roads of the capital as you pass iconic sights including Big Ben, Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London. The Thames is never far away as we cross no fewer than 18 bridges on the 55 mile route before returning to the hub for a huge celebration.

With a well-marked route and full support, all you have to do is pedal and enjoy the views and the camaraderie of your fellow fundraisers.

  • We meet early at King’s House Sports Grounds in Chiswick for registration and a briefing. Cyclists on the Challenge and Classic routes will head out clockwise alongside the Thames, criss-crossing the river over bridges which allow for great views over the surrounding city and a good way to count down our progress!

As we near the City the sights come thick and fast, as we pass Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and the Tower of London, riding over Tower Bridge – our furthest point east.

Our route back takes us predominantly south of the river; as we near Chiswick the Classic Route returns back to the hub over Chiswick Bridge (totalling 16 bridges), while the Challenge Route continues towards Twickenham and Hampton Court Palace before looping back via Kew Bridge to the hub – 18 bridges in all.

Meanwhile our Mini Route heads anti-clockwise out of the hub for a circuit between Chiswick and Hammersmith Bridges. Much of this is on cycle paths, making it a great option for families. All cyclists meet back at the Hub, and after celebrating our achievements with our fellow cyclists, we say our farewells and head home.

Detailed Information

  • Your trip will be led by experienced Discover Adventure leaders and support crew. Our leaders are selected for their knowledge and experience, friendliness and approachability, sense of humour and ability to safely and effectively deal with any situation that arises; they are also trained in first aid. You are in very safe hands with a Discover Adventure leader. The crew will have mobile phones and/or radios where appropriate, medical kit and other safety apparatus where necessary, as well as vehicle support.

  • Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary, should local conditions dictate. Pre-trip administration - such as medical questionnaires and travel insurance as appropriate - is all done with your safety in mind.

Preparing for the Challenge

  • We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice.

  • This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. Training is all part of the preparation: inadequate training will impact on your enjoyment of the trip, and your chances of completing it. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace.
