British Porphyria Association

The aim of the British Porphyria Association (BPA) is to reach out to as many people as possible - patients, doctors, hospitals and research establishments in order to improve the understanding of porphyria.

The porphyrias are a group of seven, relatively rare, genetic disorders. In each porphyria a specific enzyme is faulty. With all porphyrias this results in a build-up of porphyrins. They have two possible effects: acute attacks giving extreme pain and sickness, or extremely painful skin sensitivity in sunlight.

Support is provided in the UK through meetings, help-lines, and the dissemination of information.
